“יהוה מלך, יהוה מלך, יהוה ימלוך לעולם ועד
“Havaya is King, Havaya was King, Havaya will be King forever and ever”
We begin the next section with proclaiming that “Havaya is King.” One of the reasons we start with the present tense is because there is less of an impact on human behavior to know was and will be King. But in order for humanity to more accountable now for it’s actions, it is more necessary for man to know that right here and right now, “Havaya is King” and that hopefull this will instill a minimum level of ‘fear’ to live in accordance with king’s rules. Only then do we refer to the past and future to strengthen the importance and power of His ‘present’ Majesty.
Source of the Verse
This verse in its entirety is not brought down in the Torah but is comprised of three separate verses.
Havaya is King forever and ever; nations perish from His land”
Tehilim 10:16 – present tense
“Havaya sat [enthroned] at the flood; Havaya sat as King forever.”
Tehilim 29 – present tense
“Havaya has reigned; He has attired Himself with majesty”
Tehilim 93:1 – past tense
“Havaya will rule forever and ever”
Song of the Sea – future tense
Elevation of the Sparks
Kabbalah explains that this verse represents the מיין נוקבין, the feminine waters and is a continuation of the previous verse, אל נקמות, which invokes the spirit of the 10 martyrs. We said this is an awakening from below that liberates the divine sparks in the world of Asiya. This is why the word , מלך, which corresponds to Malchut and the world of Asiyah. Through the power of the 10 martyrs these sparks are resurrected and return to ‘rule” as they did before ‘the breaking of the vessels. The first Havaya elevates the right column. The 2nd Havaya elevates the left column. And the 3rd Havaya represents the middle column. This elevates all 10 sefirot of the world of Asiyah. We do 2 sets of this one for Z’’A and the other for the Nukva. This must all be said standing up because now all the sparks of Asiyah are rectified and elevated to the world of Yetzirah.
And now because of this illumination of divine light it is brought down that an angel stands in the middle of the heavens and proclaims, “Hashem is king, etc…” And all of the heavenly hosts and supernal beings responds after him until they approach “Barchu”. And since the angel proclaims this standing up so too it is fitting for us to proclaim it standing up. And so if the congregation is all saying this verse it is necessary to stand with them even though one is not required to interrupt one’s prayer to say it with them.
The past tense represents before creation existed where there was only the Infinite light of the Creator. And it was in its original transcendent state.
The present tense represents our current dimension of reality where the Infinite light was greatly diminished and concealed in order to be able to give light and life to all creation. And so our relationship the Creator’s light is only from within the concealed limitation of creation. And the limitless essence remains hidden. Both the laws of nature and supernatural phenomena, only allow us to perceive the kingship of the Creator, however His Infinite essence remains hidden and unperceived from us. This awakens ‘lower fear’ so that manking will behave in alignment with the divine will.
The future tense refers to the time of the Moshiach and the ultimate liberation of global human consciousnsess, where that infinite and unknowable essence will be revealed within the boundaries of reality. It will be a total integration and synthesis between the transcendent Infinite Light and finite creation. Havaya will no longer have to diminish and conceal His essence rather will be totally revealed.
This is the difference between upper fear and all of exultation versus fear of punishment. There is a difference when we know of the king from seeing his counselor and armies (Malchut), versus when we see the actual king himself (Keter). The geulah is a unification between Keter and Malchut.
Revelation at the Sea
A taste of this integration of past and presence was experienced at the crossing of the Red Sea. Before that what was known of the Creator was only in relation to how He operates within the limits of Creation. At the crossing of the sea, however, there was a revelation of the Essence itself. The word ים, ocean, refers to the sefirah Malchut. Just as the ocean conceals everything within its waters, so too the Malchut conceals the limitless light within her. When the sea was split open, the Malchut was split open and we were able to glimpse the infinite and limitless light and ‘see’ the essence of the Creator Itself. It was then that everyone immediately proclaimed, “Havaya will rule forever and ever.” The Israelites saw a vision of what will be in the final revelation where there will be a total integration between the Infinite essence and creation.
Before we start the official prayer service we meditate on each of the three different stages of creation.
We 1st meditate how Havaya brings existence into being and gives life to every living being. We awaken within ourselves the lower awareness that “Havaya is King” and we accept the authority of His rule. This creates the vessel to ascend to the higher levels of conscious perception of the light.
Then we begin to meditate that although we currently perceive Havaya to be the lifeforce and energy of creation, this is still a grossly diminished and degraded quality of the light. We meditate that before creation the Infinite essence was revealed in a way beyond what can be experienced now.
Then finally we proclaim our total trust and certainty that soon there will be a paradigm shift in global human consciousness and when humanity as a whole and with one voice will all proclaim, “Havaya will rule forever and ever.” The limitless Infinite essence of the Creator will be completely revealed and become fully illuminated within the boundaries of creation.
Imaging the spirit of the 10 martyrs dispelling the darkness and klipot of the world of Asiyah. Imagine they liberate and reveal holy sparks, like freed hostages. Imagine the feeling of these sparks and their power and sacred light. Imagine they are now resurrected, with new life and that the 10 martyrs entrust them to you to return to their home.
And now as you turn to ascend to the supernal dimensions beyond space and time. There you see the millions and millions of angelic beings and cosmic entities in all of their glory.
Then imagine that standing in the center of this army is one particular being that is about to speak. Instantly all the millions of voices are quite. Notice the silence. And then the angel proclaims, “Havaya is King, etc..” and then the thunderous roar of all the heavenly hosts repeat after him, “Havaya is King etc…”
this repeats itself. Imagine you feel an overwhelming feeling of fear and awe. Imagine feeling so small and insignificant compared to these majestic and exalted beings. However, you are on a mission and must continue to ascend higher to a place that they can never go.
